Science Specialist College
The school was awarded the prestigious Specialist College Status, with an emphasis on Science and Mathematics in September 2006.
As a Specialist College we aim to create a challenging environment that raises standards in both achievement and quality of teaching and learning for all our students. We seek to inspire and motivate by providing them with appropriate learning pathways so that they develop the skills needed to be active students within an increasingly scientific world and to progress into employment, further training and higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.
It is also our aim to develop a scientifically rich curriculum within the school and also be active partners, sharing resources, building links and disseminating good practice with parents, feeder schools, local communities and business partners.
As part of our community development in the area of science, we have hosted visiting groups of Year 4 and Year 5 pupils from feeder schools to work in the Science Laboratories. We have also hosted courses for the Science Learning Centre (SLC) and the ASE.
We have successfully applied for a number of grants and have received extra funding to develop various projects both within school and with other local schools. We also run special events within the school day targeting the learning of particular groups of pupils. These have included Murder Mystery Day and Enigma Day.
We are delighted that our Science College Manager has recently been appointed ‘Lead Practicioner Director of Specialism’ by SSAT and represents us regularly at National Conferences sharing good practice and promoting the work of the school.
