Culture and Ethos

The culture and ethos here at Challney is centred around the Challney Family. A pupil should leave school a well rounded individual, not just achieving good GCSE results, being able to go out into the world and society, understanding other people and cultures, and have a passion for learning and adventures.

Students are expected to;

  • Take the opportunities available to you- aim high

  • Don't think you can't succeed but instead, learn from your mistakes, you CAN make a difference

  • Your destiny is in your hands - use the opportunities given to you to carve out a better future.

We care deeply for every student we look after and spend time getting to know them and what their wants, needs and aspirations are. Students feel this through our extensive pastoral care;  through rewards we are able to recognise and celebrate their successes and through our numerous interventions and layers of support, we can effectively guide students where required. All along the way we keep family at the centre of what we do and thus communicate with the students' parents/guardians so they are kept continually as part of the wider conversation; this open dialogue means that every voice is heard, every idea sought and every solution reached to ensure that all students achieve the best and become the best version of themselves that they can be.

5* Challney Student

The Culture of the school here at Challney High School for Boys is centered around our 5* Challney Student Framework; this was originally created by our top student leaders called Student Executives who collaborated to decide what a Challney Student should look like.

They finalised on 5 factors, these being a;

  • 5* Challney Ambassador,

  • 5* Challney Citizen,

  • 5* Challney Gentleman,

  • 5* Challney Leader and

  • 5* Challney Learner.

These 5 5* factors now make up the essence of what every student strives to be and frame all  of our rewards here at Challney High School for Boys. Students can earn achievement points every day for any of these 5 characteristics and at the end of each term are then rewarded in (ROA) Record of Achievement Ceremonies accordingly. They also lead towards rewards trips and events throughout the year, culminating in a big awards ceremony we have termed the ACE (Achievement Celebration Evening) Awards.

The characteristics of the 5* Challney Student are posted around school so students can see what they are aiming for as they walk around the school. They are also identified in our weekly form time power-point and assemblies; these are outlined below;
